The Kaunas Dukes (1-0) kicked off the 2026 Baltic League season this past weekend with a commanding 28-0 victory over the Vilnius Iron Wolves (0-1) in a one-sided matchup. Last year’s finalists showcased their strength on the road, leaving the home team searching for answers.
A rainy start
The Lithuanian showdown took place at the Vilnius Rugby Academy stadium in Vingis Park, where players had to contend with a wet field and a slippery ball due to morning rain. Despite the challenging conditions, the weather cleared up for the match, allowing both teams to compete under comfortable skies.
The first quarter was marked by an offensive struggle, with both teams trading unsuccessful drives. However, the Iron Wolves faced a critical setback during their fourth offensive possession when they fumbled deep in their own territory. The Dukes capitalized on the short field, with running back Ugnius Čisler scoring a rushing touchdown. A successful two-point conversion put the score at 8-0.
Iron Wolves struggle to respond
The Iron Wolves attempted to bounce back with a solid offensive drive, advancing about 50 yards. Unfortunately, they failed to convert a crucial 4th-and-1, giving the ball back to the Dukes. The teams continued to trade short, unsuccessful drives until mid-second quarter when Dukes cornerback Vytautas Venčevičius intercepted a pass from Vilnius quarterback Mihai Niţu, returning it to the 8-yard line.
On the very next play, Kaunas quarterback Tomas Čaikauskas connected with rookie wide receiver Ignas Bilius. Although Bilius fumbled the ball just before crossing the goal line, veteran Antanas Baršauskas recovered it in the end zone, extending the lead to 14-0.
Missed opportunities for Vilnius
The Iron Wolves managed another solid drive, highlighted by a 40-yard pass from Niţu to rookie tight end Armant Kozlovskij, placing the ball on the 10-yard line. However, their red zone offense faltered again, ending in another failed 4th down attempt.
The Dukes responded with a strong drive of their own, featuring a 40-yard rush by Čisler. Yet, a turnover occurred when Vilnius defensive back Norbertas Mikolajūnas intercepted a pass from Dukes quarterback Artūras Mockus. Unfortunately for the Iron Wolves, their momentum was short-lived, as Dukes safety Deividas Žandaravičius intercepted another pass, returning the Dukes to the red zone. Čaikauskas then found Baršauskas in the end zone again, and after another successful two-point conversion, the Dukes led 22-0 at halftime.
Second half dominance
The second half was marked by defensive play, with multiple fumbles and interceptions from both teams. The Iron Wolves struggled to regain their footing, while Čisler rushed for his second touchdown in the third quarter, extending the lead to 28-0. The remainder of the game was a formality, with the final whistle confirming the Dukes‘ dominant victory.
The Baltic League continues on May 23 in Estonia, where the defending champions, Tartu Titans, will host the Riga Bears from Latvia.
