Kiel Baltic Hurricanes Beat Allgua Comets in EFL Championship Game

The Kiel Baltic Hurricanes took a 28-15 halftime lead against the Allgau Comets at Kilia Stadium in Kiel and went on to beat the Comets 49-28 in the EFL Bowl final Saturday.

Kiel’s Tyler Davis was outstanding scoring four touchdowns and grabbing two interceptions in leading the Hurricanes to their second EFL title in as many years. Comet’s quarterback Cedric Townsend rushed for two touchdowns and threw for two more in a losing cause.

Hurricanes head coach Stephen Parker was understandably happy with the win:

“We knew the Comets would be a tough opponent. Our players know not to take any opponent lightly and I am proud that we were able to bring the title back to Kiel for a second year.”

The game was explosive from the start as the first three drives of each team ended in scores with the lead changing five times before Kiel eventually moved ahead.

Tyler Davis

The Comets struck first with quarterback Cedric Townsend keeping the ball himself for the touchdown. But the Hurricanes retaliated quickly. Tyler Davis ran for 62 yards for his first of three touchdowns on the day. Julian Dohrendorf kicked the PAT for the 7-6 lead. However, Allgau’s Matt Green returned the kickoff all the way back to Kiel’s 16-yard line. Kiel’s defense kept the Comets out of the end zone forcing Allgau to settle for a field goal.

Tyler Davis added another touchdown for Kiel in the second quarter, giving the Hurricanes the lead again. But only one play later,  Townsend threw a 57-yard pass to Matt Green for Allgau’s next touchdown. The following two-point conversion attempt failed, but Allgau was up again, 15-14.

Following a spectacualar 62-yard kick return by Kiel receiver Jonas Brix, Philipp Schulz took a pass from Hurricanes’ quarterback Blake Bolles down to the Comets’ 1-yard line and Jaques Huke finished the job taking it in from there. The PAT put the Canes up at 21-15.

On the next Allgau drive, Tyler Davis intercepted Cedric Townsend to give his team the chance to put some distance between them and the Comets. And the Hurricanes’ offense did just that with a pass by Bolles caught in the endzone by Benedikt Englmann for the 28-15 halftime score.

In the third quarter, Davis scored his third touchdown giving the Hurricanes a seemingly insurmountable 20-point lead. However, the Comets never stopped battling as Townsend rushed for another touchdown to make the score 35-22.

At the beginning of the fourth quarter, Tyler Davis snuffed out another Allgau drive with another interception and then scored his fourth touchdown of the game capping a long Hurricanes drive and Kiel extended the lead to 42-22.

Cedric Townsend

Yet again the Comets rebounded as Townsend found Christian Hafels for a 53 yard pass and then threw the ball to him again for a six yard touchdown reducing the Kiel lead to 42-28. However, Kiel’s Sharif Bsharat delivered the game’s final score with seven yard run and defensive back Thiadric Hansen secured the 49-28 win picking off Townsend on the Kiel goal line in the very last second of the game.

With this win, the Kiel Baltic Hurricanes celebrated their second European title after winning their first EFL Bowl in 2014.
