Italy: Lazio Ducks have re-signed quarterback Luke Casey

The Lazio Ducks of Italy’s Division 1 have re-signed quarterback Luke Casey.

Casey had signed to play with Lazio for the 2020 season but that was canceled due to the pandemic.

The 6’4″, 200 pound Maryland native spent 2019 as the starting quarterback of the St. Ouen l’Aumône Cougars in France’s first division. As the starter for the Cougars he led the Paris-based team all the way the French championship game after a season where he threw for 1,950 yards and 18 touchdowns while rushing for 598 yards and another nine scores.

During the European off season, the former all-state quarterback can been seen roaming the sidelines at Archbishop Spalding High School (Maryland) as an assistant coach. Casey spent the early part of 2020 in Italy preparing for his season for the Ducks before the pandemic shut everything down in that country.

The athletic West Virginia Wesleyan (NCAA D2) product threw for 3,413 yards and 28 touchdowns during his career with the Bobcats.

Casey will have the luxury of throwing to five-year NFL veteran receiver Matt Hazel along with a host of Italian weapons.

Needless to say, he is looking forward to the prospect of playing football in Italy with the Ducks:

“I can’t think of any better situation. Waking up every day in Rome and getting to play football is pretty unreal. To be able to practice and train with some very talented Italians like Andrea Grillo and Giacomo Insom, to name a couple, is really cool. I also feel very fortunate to be able to learn from and be around Matt Hazel, Jim Herrman and head coach Dan Pippin. They all are very talented, they have great football minds, and being around them every day makes me a better football player. Couldn’t ask for a better situation.”

The Ducks finished the 2019 season with a 5-3 record and reached the Italian semifinals where they lost to the Milano Seamen who went on to win the title.
