Netherlands: Lightning Leiden edge Groningen Giants 14-9

In a hard-fought battle, the Lightning Leiden (2-1) secured a 14-9 victory over the Groningen Giants (1-3) in the Dutch Eredivisie. This win puts Leiden in a strong position for a playoff spot, while the Giants face challenges ahead as they look to regroup.

Lightning strikes first
The game started slowly for both teams, but it was Leiden that broke the deadlock. Quarterback Diego Breeschoten executed a perfect quarterback sneak to score the first touchdown, giving the Lightning an early lead. Just before halftime, the Giants managed to put points on the board with a field goal, leaving the score at 6-3 as both teams headed to the locker room.

Second half surge
The second half continued with a bit of sloppiness, but Leiden found a way to extend their lead. A spectacular reception on the right sideline set them up at the goal line, where Breeschoten once again used a sneak to score. The successful two-point conversion pushed the Lightning ahead 14-3, putting pressure on the Giants to respond.

Giants fight back
Despite a player needing medical attention, the Giants rallied and answered with a deep touchdown pass from Martin Garriga. However, their two-point conversion attempt failed, leaving them trailing by five. The Giants had two more chances to score, but their final drive ended in disappointment as they failed to convert on fourth down in the red zone.

This victory boosts Leiden’s confidence, while Groningen will need to regroup before facing the Amsterdam Crusaders in two weeks.
