The Berlin Thunder (3-4) return home looking to strengthen their playoff hopes as they welcome the Alpine Rams (1-5) in a American Football League Europe Week 9 matchup. Berlin claimed the first meeting 24-14 back in Week 2, but the Rams have grown considerably since their historic league debut, setting up a much different challenge this time around.
Both teams trending upward
The first meeting came before the Rams found their identity. Despite scoring twice on the ground through quarterback Gabriel Cunningham, Alpine was undone by penalties and costly mistakes. Since then, Cunningham has emerged as one of the league’s most dangerous dual-threat quarterbacks, extending drives with both his arm and his legs, while the defense has steadily improved under coordinator Everett Withers.
The Thunder, meanwhile, have also built confidence as the season has progressed. Their physical defense and ability to force turnovers have become trademarks, and they enter the rematch with momentum after one of their best performances of the year.

Berlin firing on offense
The Thunder rolled to a convincing 49-3 victory over the Firenze Red Lions last week behind an explosive offensive performance. Jakeb Sullivan completed 22 of 32 passes for 268 yards and five touchdowns without an interception, spreading the ball effectively throughout the game.
Niklas Schumm enjoyed a breakout afternoon with seven receptions for 138 yards and three touchdowns, while Jon Cole added six catches for 59 yards and two scores. The running game also contributed with Kai Hunter rushing for 50 yards and a touchdown, helping Berlin produce a balanced attack.
Rams continue to battle
Although the Rams came up just short in a 27-26 loss to the London Warriors, there were plenty of positives. The defense forced a fumble, intercepted two passes and recorded two sacks while repeatedly putting the offense in favorable situations.
Offensively, Cunningham once again showed why he has become one of the league’s most exciting playmakers, and the continued development of the Alpine offense has made the Rams a dangerous opponent every week.
Execution will decide it
With both teams already familiar with each other, adjustments and execution will likely determine the outcome. Berlin will look to contain Cunningham outside the pocket and continue the offensive rhythm Sullivan established last week. The Rams, meanwhile, must avoid the mistakes that proved costly in the first meeting while capitalizing on the opportunities their aggressive defense creates.
With the playoff race tightening and the regular season entering its final stretch, both teams have plenty at stake in what promises to be another physical, competitive battle.
