LIVESTREAM Austria: Vienna Knights @ Danube Dragons, June 6, 15:00 CET (3 pm, 9 am ET)

The Danube Dragons (6-1) host the Vienna Knights (6-1) on Saturday in what may be the biggest regular-season game of the year so far in the Austrian Football League, with sole possession of first place on the line.

Few would have predicted before the season that this Week 8 matchup would feature two teams tied atop the standings. Yet here they are, both sitting at 6-1 and both knowing that a victory would provide a major advantage in the race for a playoff bye and home-field advantage in the semifinals.

Dragons looking to build momentum

The Danube Dragons enter the showdown coming off an impressive 15-7 road victory over the Graz Giants.

After falling behind 7-0 early, quarterback Walter Kuhlenkamp helped lead the comeback with two rushing touchdowns. The Dragons defense then took control, shutting out Graz the rest of the way and allowing just seven points in the game.

The victory was especially important because it came one week after the team’s first loss of the season. It also kept the Dragons level with the Knights at the top of the standings.

Playing their final regular-season home game at Donaufeld only adds to the significance of the occasion for Danube.

Knights continue remarkable rise

The Knights have been one of the biggest stories in the AFL this season.

Last week they improved to 6-1 with a 21-14 victory over the AFC Vienna Vikings. Quarterback Chad Jeffries scored two rushing touchdowns, while Simon Kalkhofer added a touchdown reception as the Knights rallied from a halftime deficit.

The defense was equally important. After allowing 14 first-half points, the unit shut out the Vikings in the second half before Elias Ferchl sealed the win with a late interception.

Jeffries will have extra motivation this week. The quarterback played for the Danube Dragons from 2018 through 2022 and now returns to face his former team in a game with major playoff implications.

Familiar faces on both sidelines

The storylines do not stop with Jeffries.

Vienna head coach Ivan Zivko spent nearly a decade coaching the Dragons, leading the organization from 2007 through 2016 and winning a championship in 2010. Now he returns to Donaufeld as the leader of the league’s surprise contender.

A playoff atmosphere in June

With only three regular-season games remaining, every game carries extra weight.

Both teams have proven they can win close contests, both feature strong defenses, and both understand what is at stake. The winner will move to 7-1 and take a significant step toward securing one of the most valuable advantages available in the AFL postseason race.

For the Danube Dragons and Vienna Knights, Saturday’s clash feels a lot bigger than a typical regular-season game.
