In the opening weekend of Central European Football League play, the Swiss defending champions, the Calanda Broncos travel to Wroclaw, Poland to face the powerful Wroclaw Panthers, Saturday, April 13.
The Panthers, who reached Poland’s Liga Futbolu Amerykańskiego championship game in 2018 after losing both their starting quarterback and top defender, have looked impressive in league play so far. The Panthers have outscored opponents 147-27 in three games with quarterback Chris Forcier leading the league in passing. Panthers new head coach Val Gunn and his defensive coordinator, Skip Albano are veterans of American football in Europe and have taken an already strong team to another level.
Calanda, who surprisingly lost to the Geneva Seahawks two weeks ago , their first loss in Switzerland in two years, enter the game with a new quarterback this year, Conner Manning, from Georgia State and have added defensive lineman Robert Kitching III, (UMass, NCAA Div. I, FBS). Kitching played for the German Football League powerhouse Braunschweig New Yorker Lions. Despite the league setback, Calanda could surprise. Head coach Geoff Buffum is no stranger to international play and will have his team ready.
