The defending champion Thonon Black Panthers of France host Italy’s Firenze Guelfi on Saturday in a blockbuster Central European Football League semifinal featuring two of Europe’s most explosive offenses and a place in the CEFL championship game on the line.
This matchup also carries some history. The teams met in the second round of the 2023 competition when Firenze Guelfi hosted the game, but the Black Panthers emerged with a 27-14 victory despite playing every CEFL game on the road that season. This time, the challenge is even greater for the Italian champions as they travel to Thonon-les-Bains to face the reigning CEFL title holders on their home field.
Panthers firing on all cylinders
The Black Panthers looked every bit like defending champions in their quarterfinal win over the Manchester Titans, rolling to a convincing 55-8 victory.
Quarterback Mateo Renteria was outstanding, throwing four touchdown passes and adding two rushing touchdowns. His scoring passes went to Justin Marcus, Mehdy Radeau, Amin Ibrahim and Fodé Drame, showcasing the depth of the Thonon offense.

The defense was equally impressive. Ryan Jacquin and Adel Bafdile both returned interceptions for touchdowns, while the entire unit kept the Titans under constant pressure. Running back Lucas Davoine and Radeau also played important roles in an offense that scored from virtually every angle.
The Black Panthers have also advanced to the semifinals of the French championship and continue to look like one of Europe’s most complete teams.
Guelfi bring plenty of firepower
If any team can match Thonon’s offensive production, it may be the Firenze Guelfi.
The Italian champions dismantled the Belgrade Blue Dragons 55-7 in the quarterfinals after briefly falling behind early. Quarterback Andrea Fimiani delivered a remarkable performance, accounting for six touchdowns. He threw five scoring passes and added another touchdown on the ground.
Eystin Salum was one of the biggest stars of the game, catching two touchdown passes and later throwing another touchdown. Giacomo Mibelli, Frank Stola, Karim Diop and Cosimo Camilli also reached the end zone during the offensive explosion.
The Guelfi enter the semifinal unbeaten in the Italian league with an 8-0 record and are once again among the favorites to win the national title.
Offensive fireworks expected
Both teams scored 55 points in their quarterfinal victories, and both feature quarterbacks capable of taking over a game.
Renteria’s dual-threat ability gives the Black Panthers a unique dimension, while Fimiani has consistently shown he can stretch defenses through the air and on the ground as well.
One step from the final
With championship experience on both sidelines and elite playmakers across the field, this semifinal has all the ingredients of a classic.
The defending champions have home-field advantage in France, but the Guelfi arrive unbeaten and full of confidence. The winner will earn a place in the CEFL championship game and move one step closer to European glory.
