LIVESTREAM CFL: Edmonton Elks @ Toronto Argonauts, Sept. 19, 21:00 CET (9 pm, 3 pm ET)

TORONTO — With a playoff berth secured, the Edmonton Elks head to Toronto to face the Argonauts, trying to extend their West Division lead.

Edmonton’s offence exploded for 53 points in a win over the Calgary Stampeders in Week 15.

Toronto picked up a victory of its own last week, 26-23, against the Ottawa REDBLACKS. If Hamilton loses on Friday night, the Argos can secure a postseason berth and a home playoff date with a win over Edmonton.

The Elks took the only other meeting this season between the two teams, 42-12, back in Week 11.

Here’s three keys to victory for both teams ahead of Saturday’s 3:00 p.m. ET kickoff, which can be watched on TSN, CTV, RDS and Crave in Canada, as well as on CFL+ in the U.S. and internationally.

EDMONTON ELKS

1. WHO ANSWERS THE BELL IN THE BACKFIELD?

Running back Justin Rankin is listed as a game-time decision after he left last week’s game with a head injury. Backup rusher ShunDerrick Powell is also listed as a GTD with a rib ailment, so head coach Mark Kilam may be relying on Canadian Isaiah Knight to take the handoffs. Knight has yet to see action this season and has two carries for 12 yards in his Canadian Football League career.

2. TURNING TURNOVERS INTO POINTS

The Elks defence isn’t just forcing turnovers this season; it’s turning them into scores. Against Calgary, 20 of their points came off turnovers, bringing their total to 113. The secondary has intercepted 19 passes, led by defensive back Tyrell Ford’s six, and has eyes on adding to those numbers against quarterback Chad Kelly, who has thrown 20 interceptions this season.

3. CLEAN IT UP

The 12 penalties costing them 125 yards against the Stampeders a week ago aren’t going to cut it this time around. Giving away any extra yards, particularly to the Argos pass game, is a recipe for disaster.

TORONTO ARGONAUTS

1. SMART DECISIONS

This is so important, it bears repeating. Kelly has to find a way to take better care of the football to avoid momentum swings. The last time he faced the Elks, he completed 21-of-31 passes for 265 yards, no touchdowns and an interception.

2. KEEP SPREADING THE LOVE

What’s made Kelly successful is his ability to find any receiver at any given time. Damonte Coxie, David Ungerer III and Tyler Kahmann all have at least 848 receiving yards on the season. Add in Kevin Mital’s 735, and it rounds out a deep group. The Argos will need all of them against a talented Elks pass defence.

3. DON’T FORGET ABOUT THE DEFENCE

As much as the headlines in this matchup centre around the Argos’ offensive ability versus the Elks’ defensive prowess, Toronto’s defence needs to come to play. Edmonton ranks third in average points per game at 31.8 and fourth in net yards with 401.9. Up front, linebacker Isaac Darkangelo is responsible for taking care of the middle of the field, while defensive backs Benjie Franklin and James Ceasar, who have seven pass knockdowns apiece, zero in on the Elks receivers.

NEED TO KNOW:

  • Elks’ quarterback Cody Fajardo is 6-7 against Toronto. He’ll make his 100th start with a record of 59-39-1. He’s 219 passing yards shy of his second 4,000-yard+ season.
  • Kelly is 2-1 against Edmonton. He’s coming off his fourth 400-yard+ passing game of the season.
  • Elks’ defensive lineman Noah Taylor has at least one sack in his last four games, including a pair last week.
  • Toronto has won the teams’ previous three matchups at BMO Field, where they’re 3-0 this season.
