OTTAWA REDBLACKS
1. MCLEOD BETHEL-THOMPSON’S TIME
Ottawa is making a quarterback change, turning the reins over to veteran McLeod Bethel-Thompson as they try to get their season going in the right direction. Bethel-Thompson has completed 25-of-39 passes for 295 yards in limited action this season, including 192 yards and a touchdown last week against Toronto. Head coach Ryan Dinwiddie knows him well from their time in Toronto, and hopes to rekindle some of that magic.
2. OPTIONS TO THE LEFT AND RIGHT
Receiver Keelan White has become an important option in the REDBLACKS pass game alongside Ayden Eberhardt and Justin Hardy. The trio has accounted for 2,153 of their team’s receiving yards and will be relied upon to do the bulk of the damage against a Stampeders secondary that’s allowing 306.3 yards per game.
3. LOOK AT THE POSITIVE
Any positive the REDBLACKS can build off, they should. To start, the 26 points allowed against Toronto was the fewest the team has surrendered in a game this season. Squaring off against a Stamps offence that’s had its struggles of late, linebacker Nyles Morgan, defensive back King Ambers and the rest of the defence will try to keep up the momentum.
CALGARY STAMPEDERS
1. TURNOVERS AND TAKEAWAYS
Calgary turned the ball over five times, costing them 20 points versus the Elks. Against a team like the REDBLACKS, who are looking for any swing in momentum, the Stamps need to be careful not to beat themselves.
2. A STRONG FINAL 30
The Stampeders have had rough second halves in back-to-back weeks now, a worrying trend as they head down the stretch run. Bearing down in the back half of the game, particularly on defence, has to be an entire team effort. Veteran defensive lineman Jaylon Hutchings, linebacker Derrick Moncrief and defensive back Damon Webb have to be the ones to lead the way.
3. VERNON ADAMS JR.
If the Stamps want to get back to their winning ways, they’ll need their best players doing their part. It begins with quarterback Vernon Adams Jr., who hasn’t thrown for more than 252 yards since Week 8. As his team tries to generate offence without running back Dedrick Mills, who’s out with a hip injury, Adams Jr. needs to be playing at his best.
NEED TO KNOW:
- Ottawa swept the season series last year.
- Calgary is 2-7 in games decided in the final three minutes and 0-4 in games decided by four points or less.
- Adams Jr. is 6-2 in his career against Ottawa. With 25 touchdowns, he’s six shy of equaling his career-best.
- Bethel-Thompson (30-38) is a career 4-5 versus the Stampeders.
