LIVESTREAM German Qtrfinal: Düsseldorf Panther @ Schwäbisch Hall Unicorns, Sept. 13, 16:00 CET (4 pm, 10 am ET)

The Schwäbisch Hall Unicorns (12-0) haven’t lost a game all season, rolling through the GFL South unbeaten and earning a home quarterfinal. Now the stakes change completely as the Düsseldorf Panther (6-6), riding a strong second half of the season after a 2-4 start, arrive at OPTIMA Sportpark Saturday with a spot in the GFL semifinals on the line.

On paper, the records point heavily toward the Unicorns. But Düsseldorf has already walked into Schwäbisch Hall once this year and left with a victory, beating the Unicorns 30-27 in a preseason game.

Unicorns start over at 0-0

Schwäbisch Hall couldn’t have done much more during the regular season. The Unicorns won all 12 games, finished first in the GFL South and earned the right to open the playoffs at home.

Now none of those victories can save them if they stumble.

The Unicorns also know the Panther team arriving Saturday looks much different from the one that started the regular season 2-4. Düsseldorf went 4-2 the rest of the way, with quarterback Dawson Herl joining the team during the season and helping drive the turnaround.

That late surge carried the Panther back to the GFL playoffs for the first time since 2012.

Düsseldorf arrives with momentum

The Panther closed the regular season by beating the Straubing Spiders 42-18, finishing with 265 points scored and 290 allowed.

That followed another emphatic road performance against the Allgäu Comets, when Düsseldorf rolled to a 54-0 victory.

The challenge gets considerably tougher Saturday. Schwäbisch Hall hasn’t lost a game that counted all season, and the Panther will have to find a way to reproduce the kind of performance that produced that 30-27 preseason win at the same stadium nearly five months ago.

History repeats the matchup

There is another layer to Saturday’s quarterfinal.

The last time Düsseldorf appeared in the GFL playoffs, in 2012, the opponent was also Schwäbisch Hall. The Unicorns won that quarterfinal 41-25 before eventually capturing German Bowl XXXIV.

The Panther haven’t reached a GFL semifinal since 2011. For a club with six German championships, including its most recent in 1995, simply returning to this stage represents a significant step.

But Saturday isn’t about history.

The Unicorns enter after a perfect 12-0 regular season. The Panther arrive after fighting their way back from 2-4 to reach the postseason.
