The Potsdam Royals (6-1) return to Sportpark Luftschiffhafen on Saturday to face the Hildesheim Invaders (5-1) in one of the biggest German Football League games of the regular season. The defending champions won the first meeting 44-21 in late June, but with both teams firmly in the race near the top of the GFL North, this rematch carries even greater significance.
A battle near the top
The Royals bounced back from their first loss of the season, a 24-22 setback at the hands of the Dresden Monarchs, by defeating the Berlin Rebels 55-7 before heading into the league break, while the Invaders haven’t played since their scheduled game against the Berlin Rebels was canceled because of extreme heat.
That extended break gives Hildesheim a well-rested roster and plenty of time to prepare for another shot at the defending champions. A victory would tighten the race near the top of the standings, while Potsdam can strengthen its hold on second place with another win.
Quarterbacks take center stage
Few quarterback matchups in the GFL can match this one.
Xeaiver Bullock has thrown for 1,717 yards and 25 touchdowns while posting a 174.1 quarterback rating. He’s also a dangerous runner with 321 rushing yards and four touchdowns, making him one of the league’s most versatile offensive weapons.
Nelson Hughes III has been equally impressive for the Invaders, passing for 1,472 yards and 18 touchdowns while leading the league with a 179.9 quarterback rating despite playing one fewer game.

Playmakers everywhere
Bullock’s favorite target has been Maximilian McLeod, who leads the league with 44 receptions, 808 receiving yards and 10 touchdowns. He enters the game after an explosive performance against the Berlin Rebels, catching eight passes for 223 yards and three touchdowns.
For Hildesheim, Paul Terjung has developed into Hughes’ top target with 38 catches for 504 yards and five touchdowns.
The Royals also bring balance through Chrisman Kyei, who averages 7.3 yards per carry and has rushed for 374 yards this season, while Matti Probst leads the Invaders ground game with 286 rushing yards.
Defense could decide it
Both defenses feature game-changing talent. Joshua Wünsch leads the Royals with 30.5 tackles, Aashari Crosswell has four interceptions, and Hunter Hewitt has recorded 3.5 sacks.
The Invaders counter with one of the league’s top pass rushers in Kyle Kitchens, who has 7.5 sacks. Julian Thompson has added 22.5 tackles, 3.5 sacks and a forced fumble, while Willem Vancompernolle has contributed two interceptions in the secondary.
Hildesheim also arrives with reinforcements, adding Fabian Rolfes, Sam Potter, Otavio Amorim and Wilhelm Schubert to bolster the roster for one of the toughest road tests of the season.
With two explosive offenses, disruptive defenses and major playoff implications, this has all the ingredients of one of the GFL’s premier matchups of the year.
