The Braunschweig Lions (3-7) will try to keep their playoff hopes alive Saturday when they host the defending champion Potsdam Royals (8-1) at Eintracht Stadium in a German Football League North matchup that carries plenty of weight for both teams.
The Lions need wins as they chase fourth place and a postseason berth, while the Royals are looking for their ninth victory and a stronger grip on a home quarterfinal.
Lions fighting to stay alive
It has been an up-and-down season for Braunschweig, which struggled early against several of the GFL North’s top teams before finding some traction.
Head coach Brayden McCombs’ squad has picked up victories over the Düsseldorf Panther, Straubing Spiders and Saarland Hurricanes, but enters Saturday coming off a loss to the Hildesheim Invaders.
Quarterback Ryon Thomas leads an offense featuring Peter Anderson, Leon Kusterer and tight end Jonathan ter Horst. Against a defense playing as well as Potsdam’s, the Lions will need that group to sustain drives and avoid giving the defending champions extra possessions.

Royals defense setting the tone
The Royals arrive in Braunschweig with one of the GFL’s most impressive defensive resumes.
Potsdam has surrendered just 79 points through nine games and enters the matchup after consecutive shutouts, including last week’s 49-0 victory over the Düsseldorf Panther.
That defense has helped keep the Royals firmly in second place behind the unbeaten Dresden Monarchs in the North.
Harvey takes charge of Potsdam offense
Quarterback Hugh “Bay” Harvey has taken over the Potsdam offense following the departure of Xeaiver Bullock and now gets another opportunity to settle into a unit that has scored 403 points this season.
Harvey has plenty of help around him. Running backs Chrisman Kyei and Heiko Bals give the Royals options on the ground, while Maximilian McLeod is part of a deep receiving group.
On defense, linebacker Joshua Wünsch anchors a unit that also features experienced defensive backs Ronaldo Tomasello and Ruben De Ruyter.
Braunschweig needs to control the pace
For the Lions, allowing the Royals to dictate the game early could make for a long afternoon. Braunschweig needs to put pressure on Harvey, limit big plays and give Thomas and the offense opportunities to keep the chains moving.
