The Frankfurt Universe (0-1) will host the Saarland Hurricanes (1-0) the in this GFL South matchup. These two squads both opened their seasons last weekend, but the weekend’s similarities stop there.
The Frankfurt Universe go into the season with an entirely new team than the 2019 semifinal squad we last saw. This roster features few imports and many new players. Many of these new faces are coming from teams in the lower divisions of German football. In an intriguing roster move, head coach Mele Mosqueda has brought in German quarterback Ferras El-Hendi. The 6’4″ 25-year-old is a promising quarterback prospect who is a product of the Dresden Monarchs youth program. El-Hendi projects to the German Football League’s third starting home grown quarterback. Fans can expect El-Hendi to develop as he becomes more and more comfortable in his new role.

French running back Jason Bofunda showed some skills for the Universe last weekend rushing for 80 yards. Bofunda joins coach Mosqueda from the Paris-based Flash de La Courneuve. Look for the French national team running back to be a focal point in Frankfurt’s offense this season.
Meanwhile, Saarland kicked off their first season back in Germany’s top league in style , defeating the Stuttgart Scorpions 36-5 in their brand-new stadium. Quarterback Josh Goldin was able to find his playmakers all over the field as the offense flowed throughout the game. Two standouts from the offense were receiver Victor Wharton and running back Kai Hunter. Both might be names to remember in this year’s talent stuffed GFL South.
On the other side of the ball, Saarland defensive back Chaz Elder and linebacker First Yildirim smothered the struggling Stuttgart’s offense. Look for this defense to have another big day as Frankfurt’s offense searches for an identity.
The Hurricanes look to open their season with two straight wins in their return to the German Football League. Look for the talented Hurricanes trio of Goldin, Hunter, and Wharton to play well against a Frankfurt defense that struggled last week.
