A record 33 teams from 14 nations hit the fields in Lido delle Nazioni, Italy, Thursday as the 2026 IFAF European Youth Flag Football Championships kick off three days of competition with titles on the line in the U17 Boys, U17 Girls and U15 Mixed divisions.
From Thursday through Saturday, Spiaggia Romea Village & Residence becomes the center of European youth flag football before the tournament moves to Hilderaldo Luiz Bellini Stadium in Comacchio for Saturday’s championship games.
Record field arrives in Italy
This year’s tournament is the largest edition yet, with Poland making its debut as the championship continues to expand alongside the rapid growth of flag football across Europe.
The event has developed into the world’s largest and longest-running continental youth flag football championship, providing young players with an early taste of international competition.
And there is now a very real destination at the end of that pathway.
More than 15 players who competed at the 2026 IFAF Flag Football World Championships previously played in the European Youth Championships. That group includes Italy’s Andrea Volonnino and Daniele Latoracca, who helped the Italian men’s team capture silver last month in Düsseldorf and qualify for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.
For the players taking the field this week, the Olympics are no longer some distant possibility. They are part of the first generation of young flag football players growing up knowing their sport has a place on the Olympic stage.

Italy brings championship pedigree
Host nation Italy will compete in all three divisions and enters the tournament having reached the podium in each of the past four editions.
The Italian U17 Girls carry the biggest target after winning the European championship in Innsbruck last year. Italy rolled past Germany 53-15 in the 2025 final and returns home this week as the defending champion.
This marks the third time in six years that Italy has hosted the tournament, following the 2021 and 2023 editions.
The U15 Mixed competition also gives the championship a distinctive element, putting boys and girls on the same field as part of a format built around inclusivity.
Three days decide European champions
Every game will matter quickly.
The tournament runs only three days, meaning teams have little room to stumble before the brackets begin taking shape. By Saturday, three new IFAF European champions will be crowned in Comacchio.
Fans won’t have to wait for the medal rounds to follow the action. Games played on Fields 1 and 2 will be streamed live on the official IFAF YouTube channel, along with the medal games, while scores, statistics, standings and tournament brackets will be updated live through IFAF Play.
The Cleveland Browns are also an official partner of the championship through their wider relationship with FIDAF, with Browns Italia branding appearing around the tournament venue.
But Thursday morning, the banners and opening ceremonies give way to football.
Thirty-three teams have made their way to Italy. Three European titles are waiting. And for a generation that can now realistically dream about playing flag football at the Olympics, the road starts on the fields of Lido delle Nazioni.
