Women’s Flag Football Semifinals: Aug. 16, 09:10-11:45 CET (9:10-11:45 am, 3:10-5:45 am ET)
09:10 CET: United States vs Austria:
USA against Austria is a repeat of last summer’s IFAF World Championships semifinal in Finland and on that occasion the United States eased into the gold medal game with a 41-24 win. USA beat Austria 48-34 during Thursday’s preliminary round stages on the way to a 3-0 record to top Group A. In the quarterfinals, quarterback Vanina Krouch shared four touchdowns between Izzy Geraci and Madison Fulford in a 33-12 dismantling of Italy.
Austria finished third in Group A, losing to USA and Canada and only narrowly beat China. They bounced back in the quarterfinals with a 40-28 victory over Great Britain as Karoline Kugler scored four touchdowns, reeling in a hat trick through the air and one rushing. Magdalena Helm twice found the end zone as veteran quarterback Saskia Stribrny threw for five touchdowns.
10:30 CET: Mexico vs Canada
Mexico holds the historical edge over Canada having beaten them in the group stages and in the quarterfinals of the 2024 IFAF World Championships in Finland. In the 2008 world championships, Mexico won gold with a 27-18 victory over the host Canadians and beat them to the bronze medal in 2016.
Led by iconic quarterback Diana Flores, Mexico posted a perfect 3-0 record to top Group B, beating Japan, Italy and Great Britain. They shutout China in the quarterfinals, scoring 20 unanswered points in each half in a 40-0 win as Tania Rincon threw for four touchdowns and Silvia Contreras totaled four receiving touchdowns.
Canada’s only group stages loss in Chengdu came to the United States in the opening game of the tournament before they beat Austria and China to post a 2-1 finish. In the quarterfinals, Canada clawed their way back from a 20-6 deficit to win on the game’s final play with only two seconds remaining as they trailed by a point.
