Marburg Mercenaries get fourth consecutive win in young GFL season

After losing their season opener against the Schwäbisch Hall Unicorns, Marburg has won its fourth straight game 24-7 against the Stuttgart Scorpions.

In front of 920 people, newly acquired quarterback Chad Jeffries, despite arriving in Germany only days prior, had a commendable performance, throwing for two touchdowns and three interceptions. The Californian was acquired after Emanuel Lewis suffered a fractured collarbone.

But it wasn’t Jeffries who threw the first touchdown, but running back Andreus Lindley, who connected on a short pass to tight end Felix Schumacher for six points. Stuttgart’s offense tried to answer, but a weakened receiving corps dropped important balls by Conner Sullivan, and thus wasn’t able to tie the game.

The second quarter saw Phil Lanieri catch a pass by Jeffries, whose first game impressed offensive coordinator Leon La Deaux: “That was his first competitive game since November and he did not had a lot of time to get into rhythm with his receivers. Considering the circumstances, he performed well.”

Right before the halftime whistle, the Scorpions had a chance to score, but was stopped in a goal line stand by the Mercenaries’ defense at the 1-yard line.

The third quarter was marked by penalties on both side, Marburg kicker Hendrik Schwarz, who also converted all his PATs, was the only one who scored that quarter via a field goal.

Lanieri decided the outcome of the game in the fourth quarter with another touchdown catch from Jeffries. Stuttgart was able to get points on the board late in the game by a touchdown run by Sullivan.
