Mexico: Liga de Fútbol Americano Profesional prepares for the 2023 season

After a successful 2022 season that resulted in the Fundidores de Monterrey winning Tazón México V, Liga de Fútbol Americano Profesional, Mexico’s premiere professional American football league is ready to begin their 2023 season.

This season will be different from the last with some notable changes. First off, the LFA no longer has any competition, with their main rival, Fútbol Americano de México (FAM) folding last season. Three of their teams, the Caudillos de Chihuahua, Jefes de Ciudad Juárez and the Reds CDMX moved over to the LFA following the FAM’s dissolution, expanding the number of teams from seven, to 10.

More teams means more games, as the league also expanded the number of games per team from six to 10, bringing the total number of regular season games from 36 to 50. Like last year, there will be no divisional placement and the teams that will qualify for the playoffs will only be by overall league record.

However, despite the increase the regular season, the post-season will still only have the top six teams qualify, just like last year, with the top two teams record-wise have first round byes and home field in the semifinals, while the three seed hosts the six seed and the four seed hosts the five seed in the wild card round, like last year.
