Mexico in mourning, college games postponed, players help in rescue efforts

The two devastating earthquakes which struck Mexico causing widespread damage and resulting in hundreds of deaths understandably also had an impact on Mexico’s college football scene last weekend.  Many games could not be played while rescuers combed the wreckage looking for survivors.

Many of the players whose games were postponed instead took part in rescue efforts including UNAM Pumas captain and linebacker Abraham Herrera pictured above.

Prior to the game between the Águilas of the Autonomous University of Chihuahua and the Leones of the Univarsidad Anahuac México Norte players from both teams raised their arms with a clenched fist in honor of the rescue workers who use a similar gesture to call for silence when a noise is heard.

Both Mexican leagues are back in action this weekend with a full slate of games. In honor of the victims, all the teams in the ONEFA will bear a special helmet decal.

The ONEFA  also  announced that this games will resume this weekend, Week 5 but that Week 6 interconference games would be cancelled to be replaced by the postponed games.
