Minnesota HS team scores 19 points in final minute to win playoff game

Maple Grove High School in Minnesota pulled off one of the most improbable comebacks you’ll ever see last month. The “Crimson” trailed St. Michael-Albertville 27–10 with 59 seconds to play in the Class 6A state quarterfinals – and won.

The comeback started when Crimson quarterback Curtis Haugen found Joe Raymon for a 30-yard touchdown with 59 seconds left. After recovering the onside kick, Haugen again found Raymon who raced down the sidelines for another score—this time for 49 yards. That made it 27–22. Incredibly, Maple Grove recovered another  onside kick and Raymon made another spectacular catch, this time leaping high in the air with one hand that set Maple Grove up at the one yard line. Running back Evan Hull waltzed in for the go-ahead score with just four seconds to play.

Head coach Matt Lombardi spoke to the Star-Tribune:

“Just like we drew it up,” Lombardi told his players after the game, “It just shows as bad as things might seem for you, you can never give up. You have to keep playing and hope things fall in your favor.”

Unfortunately, the following week, Maple Grove were eliminated in the Minnesota state semifinals by Eden Prairie.
