The Dresden Monarchs (7-0) strengthened their grip on first place in the German Football League North by handing the Potsdam Royals (5-1) their first loss of the season, edging the defending champions 24-22 Saturday evening in a dramatic battle played under extreme heat at Luftschiffhafen in Potsdam.
Originally scheduled for the afternoon, kickoff was delayed by two-and-a-half hours as temperatures climbed toward 40 degrees Celsius. Despite the demanding conditions, the two title contenders delivered one of the season’s best games.
Monarchs seize early control
Dresden wasted little time making an impact.
On the Royals’ opening possession, Lucas Massero intercepted a pass from Xeaiver Bullock, immediately setting the tone for the visitors. Rocky Lombardi capitalized moments later, finding Montigo Moss behind the defense for a touchdown and an early 7-0 lead.
The Royals responded quickly when Bullock connected with Maximillian McLeod for a touchdown, but a failed two-point conversion left Dresden in front 7-6.
The Monarchs continued to dictate the tempo. Florian Finke added a field goal before David Moore III capped a long second-quarter drive with a short touchdown run, giving Dresden a 17-6 halftime advantage after an impressive first half on both sides of the ball.
Royals fight back
The defending champions came out of the locker room with renewed energy.
Heiko Bals opened the second half with a field goal to trim the deficit to 17-9 before the Royals appeared ready to seize momentum. However, a lengthy drive into the red zone repeatedly stalled as penalties wiped points off the board, and a costly fumble just short of the goal line denied Potsdam a golden opportunity.
Although the Royals kept pressing, Dresden’s defense continued to come up with timely stops.
Moore delivers the decisive score
With just over six minutes remaining, the Monarchs produced the drive that ultimately decided the game.
A long completion from Lombardi to Moss set up Moore’s second rushing touchdown of the evening, and Finke’s extra point extended the lead to 24-15.
Bullock answered with a late rushing touchdown to bring the Royals within two points, but the comeback fell just short as Dresden held on through the closing seconds.
The victory keeps the Monarchs unbeaten at 7-0 heading into the summer break while snapping Potsdam’s impressive winning streak. For the Royals, the defeat was disappointing, but their spirited second-half rally showed why they remain one of the German Football League’s premier championship contenders.
