NFL line judge Jeff Seeman had some choice words for Arizona Cardinals tight end Trey McBride on Sunday and the league is reportedly looking into the incident.
CBS cameras caught those words, much to the delight of McBride who laughed and pointed it out as soon as he realized that a camera was pointed at the official during the Cardinals’ game at the New York Giants.
There were no microphones nearby, so what Seeman said is left strictly up to the interpretation of lip readers. But Seeman clearly wasn’t telling McBride to have a nice day.
The interaction caught the attention of NFL Players Association executive director JC Tretter, who called on the NFL to hold Seeman accountable while sharing video on social media of the incident.
Shortly after Tretter’s tweet, The Athletic’s Jonathan Jones reported that the NFL stated that it’s “looking into the matter.”
The interaction took place after game officials declined to call pass interference on a critical failed third-down pass from Jacoby Brissett to McBride. Giants cornerback Dru Phillips had coverage on the play and made contact with McBride before the ball arrived. McBride immediately protested the no-call to Seeman, who was standing next to the play. McBride’s protests were to no avail and eventually drew the response seen above.
The Cardinals trailed 27-24 at the time of the incompletion and punted on the next play with 4:53 remaining in regulation. The Giants won the game 36-24.
McBride didn’t address Seeman’s comments with reporters postgame. The subject did not come up in the postgame pool report.
