The Wroclaw Panthers (5-2) took a major step forward in the Polish Football League playoff race Sunday, building a huge first-half lead and cruising to a 36-16 road victory over the Bialystok Lowlanders (4-3). Led by another outstanding performance from Re-Al Mitchell, the Panthers dominated the opening two quarters and never allowed the hosts to seriously threaten despite a much stronger second-half effort from Bialystok.
The win strengthens Wroclaw’s position among the league contenders, while Bialystok was left to wonder what might have been after a difficult opening half.
Missed chance changes momentum
The game could hardly have started in a more frustrating fashion for the Lowlanders.
Bernardo Horevitch appeared to give Bialystok an early lead with a punt return touchdown, but a blindside block penalty wiped the score off the board. Instead of celebrating seven points, the hosts remained scoreless and watched the momentum swing immediately to the visitors.
The Panthers took full advantage.
Krystian Stępczak opened the scoring with a two-yard touchdown run before Re-Al Mitchell added the two-point conversion. Mitchell then connected with Stępczak on a 41-yard touchdown pass and added another conversion to make it 16-0.
Mitchell leads offensive explosion
The second quarter belonged entirely to Mitchell and the Panthers offense.
Mitchell broke loose on a 42-yard touchdown run before finding Tomasz Burdziński for an 11-yard score. Another successful two-point conversion stretched the lead to 30-0 by halftime and left the stunned home crowd searching for answers.
The Lowlanders struggled to establish any offensive rhythm, with turnovers, missed opportunities and inaccurate passing preventing them from mounting a response.
Lowlanders rally after halftime
The hosts finally showed signs of life in the second half, but the hole was simply too deep.
Mitchell added his fifth touchdown contribution of the afternoon with a 30-yard touchdown run to push the lead to 36-0 before Bialystok got on the board.
Horevitch electrified the crowd with an 87-yard kickoff return touchdown, and Brett Pullman later connected with Piotr Maksymiuk on a 49-yard scoring strike. Both touchdowns were followed by successful two-point conversions.
The comeback effort came too late, however, as the Wroclaw Panthers completed a convincing victory behind another outstanding performance from Mitchell, who was responsible for five touchdowns in one of the league’s biggest games of the weekend.
