Potsdam Royals overwhelm the Kiel Baltic Hurricanes in GFL season opener
The defending champion Potsdam Royals (1–0) opened their German Football League title defense with a commanding 48–7 victory over the Kiel Baltic Hurricanes (0–1) at Luftschiffhafen Stadium on Saturday, showcasing their explosive offense and stifling defense.
Royals ignite early with explosive plays
After Kiel missed a red-zone field goal on their opening drive, Potsdam struck immediately. Quarterback Tyrrell Pigrome connected with Romello Bentley on an 85-yard touchdown pass, followed by a 50-yard score to Malik Flowers, pushing the lead to 16–0. The Royals capitalized on a high-octane attack, leaving Kiel scrambling to contain their speed.
Hurricanes’ errors fuel Royals’ momentum
A second-quarter interception deep in Kiel territory set up a Heiko Bals field goal (19–0). Though Kiel briefly responded—PJ Settles rushed for a 9-yard TD after a fumble recovery by Rob Revels—Potsdam answered swiftly. Backup QB Sebastian Schulz, replacing an injured Pigrome, found Alex Labella for a 30-yard score, extending the lead to 26–7 at halftime.
Second-half onslaught seals rout
Potsdam extinguished any Kiel comeback hopes instantly. Malik Flowers returned the third-quarter kickoff for a touchdown, followed by Heiko Bals’ rushing score. Schulz later hit Finn Krause for a 23-yard TD, capping a 22-point second half. The Royals’ defense held firm, allowing just 150 total yards and forcing two turnovers.
Kiel’s struggles and road ahead
“Against a team like Potsdam, mistakes are fatal,” admitted Kiel head coach Timo Zorn. The Hurricanes, held scoreless after their lone second-quarter drive, face a quick turnaround, hosting the Dresden Monarchs on May 18 at Kilia Stadium.
Royals’ statement victory
With Pigrome’s precision (2 TDs), Schulz’s adaptability, and Flowers’ electrifying plays, Potsdam reaffirmed their championship pedigree. Their balanced attack—423 total yards, including 278 through the air—left no doubt about their title ambitions.
