The Regensburg Phoenix earned the first German Football League victory in club history on Sunday, defeating the Düsseldorf Panther 23-16 at Benrath Stadium. After opening the season with four straight losses, Regensburg delivered a disciplined performance in difficult weather conditions to secure a milestone win, while Düsseldorf remained in search of its first victory.
First quarter sets the tone
The visitors wasted little time making an impact. Quarterback Cameron Yowell guided the opening drive with a balanced mix of runs and passes before finding Nicolas Hayes on a 29-yard touchdown strike. Dominik Laßmann added the extra point to give Regensburg a 7-0 lead.
The Panther answered with a strong ground attack led by Daniel Pedro and drove deep into Phoenix territory. However, the Regensburg defense stiffened near the goal line, forcing a field goal instead of a touchdown and limiting the damage to 7-3.
Hayes shines before halftime
Heavy rain arrived early in the second quarter, turning the field slick and challenging both offenses. The weather did little to slow down Yowell and Hayes.
A deep completion to Kevin Evert moved the ball into the red zone, and Hayes hauled in his second touchdown reception of the afternoon to extend the lead to 14-3.
To their credit, Düsseldorf responded. A 25-yard touchdown pass cut the deficit to 14-10 and gave the home crowd renewed energy. The Panther had an opportunity to add more points before halftime, but Regensburg’s special teams came through with a blocked field goal, preserving the four-point advantage at the break.
Defense takes control
The third quarter belonged to the visitors.
After the Phoenix defense stopped Düsseldorf on fourth down deep in its own territory, Nebechi Abana punched in a touchdown run to make it 21-10. Moments later, Jaylin Woods recovered a fumble as the Regensburg defense continued to dominate.
The combination of timely takeaways and strong field position allowed the Phoenix to control both the tempo and momentum of the game.
Historic win secured
With rain once again pouring down in the fourth quarter, both teams struggled to move the ball consistently. Regensburg stayed patient and relied on its defense.
A key sequence midway through the quarter resulted in a safety after heavy pressure in the backfield, with Woods again playing a major role. The two points pushed the lead to 23-10 and proved crucial.
An interception later gave Düsseldorf one last opportunity, and the hosts managed a late touchdown to close the gap to 23-16. However, Regensburg recovered the ensuing onside kick, and Yowell kneeled out the final seconds to seal a historic first GFL victory for the Phoenix.
