Our deepest condolences go out to the extended football family of Dr. Carl “Duke” Iverson who died Thursday, February 11 in Oregon. He was 80 years old.
A native of Washington State, Iverson’s impact as a coach stretched all the way from Oregon where he coached the Western Oregon University Wolves (1985-87 and 2001-04), to Colorado coaching the Western Colorado Mountaineers for 12 seasons (1988-95 and 1997-2000) as well as to South Dakota (Black Hills State University), Austria, Finland, Australia and Sweden.
Throughout his 21 years of coaching football at Black Hills State, Western Colorado and Western Oregon, he went 126-84-3. Iverson tallied 15 seasons winning at least five games in a season, winning at least seven in a season on 10 occasions and reaching a high of 10 wins in a season in 1991 with Western Colorado. He collected eight conference championships and was named the NAIA Division I Coach of the Year (1991) and RMAC Coach of the Year twice (1996 and 1997). From 2008 to 2016 he was the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach for Central High School in Oregon.
He served as the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks/receivers coach for the 2009 Eurobowl-winning Swarco Raiders and was an assistant coach for the Australian National Team that competed in the 2011 IFAF World Championships held in Austria. In 2013, he was the offensive coordinator for Finland’s Jyväskylä Jaguars and in 2015 he had a brief stint (two games) with Sweden’s Carlstad Crusaders.
