Søllerød Gold Diggers dominate Aarhus Tigers in Danish National League

The Søllerød Gold Diggers (2-1) wasted no time Saturday in making a statement scoring on their first drive en route to a 56-0 win over the Aarhus Tigers (0-3) in Denmark’s National League.

Gold Diggers quarterback Tanner Gueller completed 16 of 22 passes for 335 yards and five touchdowns while rushing for another 20 yards and a score.

Needless to say, Gueller was happy with his team’s performance:

“All in all I thought the game was a good step forward for us. Offensively we moved the ball well and put points on the board. And our defense played great not giving up any points. It was a great team effort and we hope to keep this momentum rolling.”

Søllerød wide receiver Thomas Ashworth had a field day and was on the receiving end of seven of those passes for 149 yards and a touchdown which is an average of 21.2 yards a catch. He also added a 57 yard punt return. It was one of those days. Teammate Adria Botella caught seven passes as well, for 118 yards and three touchdowns while Phillip Holm hauled in six for 78 yards and a score, and Andreas Paaske had two for 70 and another touchdown. Running back Rasmus Carøe rushed 11 times for 59 yards and a touchdown while Gueller added 20 yards rushing and a touchdown to go along with a two-point conversion.

For the Tigers, quarterbacks Alexander Schwartz and Christoffer Carstens combined for 79 yards passing with the  entire team rushing for a total of eight yards.

It was one of those days.

Ashworth scored the first touchdown of the game on a four yard pass from Gueller early in the first quarter. With Aarhus unable to move the ball past midfield, Gueller scored at the end of the quarter and added the two-point conversion fora 14-0 score.

Paaske (33 yards), Botella (51 yards) and Holm (14 yards) all added touchdowns in the second quarter to boost the lead to 34-0 by halftime. They have a mercy rules in Denmark but it doesn’t automatically kick in until a team has a 35 point lead, so the second half opened as usual.

However, Ashworth returned a Tigers punt following a quick three and out, racing 57 yards down to the Aarhus 18 yard line. Five plays later it was Botella’s turn again, and with Gueller adding the two-point conversion, the score was 42-0.

That triggered a running clock but the Gold Diggers still managed to score twice more against a demoralized Tigers squad with Botella hauling in a six yard touchdown pass and Carøe scoring from 22 yards out to end the game.

Next up for the Gold Diggers is a trip to face the Triangle Razorbacks on Sunday, September 6. Aarhus plays the final game of the season on September 12 when they host the Copenhagen Towers.
