The Spanish National Women’s American Football Team returns to action this Saturday, October 18, for its second game in the IFAF 2025-2026 Women’s European Championships. Under the guidance of coach Manuel Ibáñez, the team will face Great Britain at the Oroel Municipal Field in Jaca, Aragon.
A must-win situation for both teams
For Spain, the reigning continental champion, this matchup against Great Britain is absolutely crucial in their bid to retain their title. After falling to Germany 22-7 in their debut, another defeat against the British would severely jeopardize their chances of reaching the final. Great Britain also finds itself in a must-win situation, having lost in overtime to Finland (6-3). The Finnish team currently leads the standings with two victories: 21-7 against Germany and the win over Great Britain.
Championship format and upcoming matches
The IFAF 2025-2026 Women’s European Championship features a league format with Spain, Germany, Great Britain, and Finland. The top two teams will advance to the grand final for gold, scheduled for August 2026, while the other two teams will compete for bronze. After their game against Great Britain, Spain will close out the first round against Finland on May 30 or 31, 2026, also at home.
Building a new identity
“After the defeat against Germany, we know exactly what’s at stake. This match against Great Britain in Jaca is vital, and we have to try to win it no matter what,” says coach Manuel Ibáñez. The Spanish national team has been training in Jaca since October 12, with a squad of 39 players from the leading national teams.
Following their continental gold in 2024, Spain is navigating a generational change, blending young talent with experienced players.
“We have an incredible group of players. Many are young, part of a new generation that is taking a step forward in a time of transition. We are in a process of rebuilding, not only in terms of the playbook or the structure, but also in terms of identity and leadership,” emphasizes Ibáñez.
In their last encounter during the European Championships, Spain edged out Great Britain 21-16 at the Calatayud Sports City in April 2024, securing their first continental title. As they prepare for this crucial matchup, the Spanish team aims to build on that historic victory.
