Sweden and Finland will square off in annual “grudge” games

The American Football Association of Finland, SAJL and the Swedish American Football Federation, SAFF, have agreed to hold their annual “grudge” games this year as well.

Since 1992 these two nations have faced each other at the men’s senior level a record 28 times with Finland holding a decided edge, 17 wins and 11 losses.

This year the games will also include the senior women’s tackle, women’s flag and U17 boy’s tackle.

All these events will of course be held subject to the coronavirus situation at that time and according to the regulations and travel restrictions in effect. The final decision on whether to play or not will be made on September 1.

Originally, Team Finland and Team Sweden were scheduled to meet on August 1 in Espoo, Finland in a semifinal game for the 2020 IFAF European Men’s Championship. But due to the corona pandemic, the European Men’s Championship has been now postponed until 2021.

Schedule

Sat. Oct. 31: Senior Men’s Tackle, hosted by SAFF at Stockholm Arena

Sat. Nov. 7: Senior Women’s Tackle, Women’s Flag hosted by SAJL, at Helsinki Arena

Sun. Nov. 8: U17 Boy’s Tackle, Women’s Flag, hosted by SAJL, at Helsinki Arena

In addition, the Nordic federations have agreed to play the U19 Nordic championship tournament in October in Denmark, subject to the same strict preconditions.
