The Tampere Saints (2-4) strengthened their playoff hopes Thursday night, rolling to a 45-7 road victory over the East City Giants (1-5) in Maple League action. The Saints put together one of their most complete performances of the season, using a balanced offensive attack and timely defensive plays to earn their second straight win.
Strong start sets the tone
The East City Giants were already short-handed before kickoff after losing starting running back Sebastian Lugora from the lineup, and their situation became even more difficult when backup running back Aleksi Kauppinen was injured early in the game.
Making his debut after arriving in Finland on short notice, quarterback Norman Douglas Jr. showed flashes of promise for ECG. He completed 18 of 40 passes for 248 yards and a touchdown, connecting seven times with Oskari Suoniemi for 143 yards. Their biggest play covered 52 yards, and one of those receptions resulted in the home team’s only touchdown.

Saints find offensive rhythm
The Saints controlled the game on the ground and through the air. Konsta Mäenpää led the rushing attack with 123 yards on 15 carries, averaging an impressive 8.2 yards per attempt while scoring twice.
Quarterback Christopher Howard Jr. continued his strong recent form throwing for 252 yards and two touchdowns, consistently finding Kimi Tuomi, who finished with nine receptions for 123 yards and a score. Joona Tuominen also made an impact, catching his first touchdown pass of the season.
After Howard Jr. was forced from the game in the fourth quarter following an injury, Logan Collier stepped in to direct the offense. He capped the victory by rushing for two late touchdowns to seal the 45-7 final.
Defense delivers key plays
The Saints defense also played a major role in the victory. Juho Angervo came up with two of the night’s biggest plays, intercepting a pass near his own goal line before later recovering a fumble to halt another ECG scoring opportunity.
For the East City Giants, Tyran Dixon was a bright spot defensively, recording 2.5 sacks despite the lopsided defeat.
While the victory keeps Tampere’s postseason hopes alive, attention now turns to the health of Howard Jr. If the starting quarterback is forced to miss time, it would be a significant challenge as the Saints continue their push for a playoff berth.
