In front of a roaring crowd of over 12,000 spectators who filled Monterrey Tech stadium in Monterrey Mexico, Team Mexico dominated the United States en route to a resounding 35-7 victory to win the World University Championship and defend the title they won two years ago.
The game was never really in doubt.
After Team Mexico recovered from a stunning early touchdown by Elgin Hilliard of the USA on the opening drive of the game, they put on a clinic taking a 21-7 lead at the half which the Americans could not overcome.
Mexican quarterback Francisco Mata Charles who was named Mexico’s game MVP, threw a touchdown pass to Jorge Retana and ran one in himself. Receiver Daniel Haro, running a receiver option, found Pedro Magallanes in the end zone while running backs Fernando Mejia and Marcelo González added the other majors.
Team USA could never get untracked as Mexico’s defense kept the powerful American offense in check. A blocked punt midway through the fourth quarter led to Mexico’s final touchdown finishing the day for the United states.
Mexico won the inaugural World University Championship tournament in Uppsala, Sweden two years ago.
