Vikings silence upset talk in Wrocław, pull away from Panthers in 42–23 road win
By John Mahnen
For a while on Sunday afternoon in Wrocław, the Panthers Wrocław looked ready to turn the American Football League Europe’s early-season hierarchy upside down.
The home team had the Vienna Vikings under pressure, the scoreboard was tight, and more than a few pundits were likely preparing their “upset alert” posts midway through the second quarter. But by the end, the most expensive and most complete roster in the AFLE had delivered the answer that title contenders are supposed to deliver.
Vienna quarterback Ben Holmes threw four touchdown passes, Yannick Mayr produced two explosive scoring catches, and the Vikings defense forced two crucial fumbles as Vienna pulled away from the Panthers for a 42–23 win at Stadion Olimpijski.
The result moves the Vikings to 2–0 in the AFLE’s debut season and confirms what many suspected after Week 1: Chris Calaycay’s team is not just talented, it is built to survive difficult stretches and then punish opponents when the game opens up.
Wrocław, now 1–1, showed enough to remain in the contender conversation. Jameson Wang threw for 356 yards and three touchdowns, while Michael Harley Jr. was outstanding with 11 catches for 183 yards and two scores. But the Panthers also left points and possessions on the field, lost two fumbles, went just 1-for-4 on fourth down and managed only 64 rushing yards.
That was not enough against Vienna.
Early blows are traded
The Panthers struck first after an early Vienna turnover on downs, putting together an 11-play drive that ended with Jakub Ciurkot’s 30-yard field goal. The Vikings responded with a more physical drive, leaning on Albert Wiesigstrauch and Karri Pajarinen before Holmes finished it himself from the 1-yard line. Dennis Tasic’s extra point was blocked, leaving Vienna ahead 6–3.
Wrocław then produced one of the first big swings of the game. Eduardo Perez broke free for a 61-yard gain, but Benjamin Straight forced a fumble near the goal line and Elmeri Laalo recovered at the Vienna 3. The Panthers still cashed in moments later when Adam Lary blocked Philipp Klar’s punt out of the end zone for a safety, cutting the score to 6–5.
Early in the second quarter, Wrocław grabbed the lead. Wang found Harley for a 62-yard touchdown, and even with the extra point blocked, the Panthers led 11–6. At that point, the upset conversation was very much alive.
Vikings seize control
Then Holmes and the Vikings offense took over.
Holmes hit Mayr for a 44-yard touchdown to put Vienna back in front, then found Noah Toure from 15 yards out midway through the quarter to extend the lead to 19–11. Wrocław answered with Wang’s 11-yard scoring pass to Juan Flores-Calderon, but the failed two-point attempt kept Vienna ahead 19–17.
That narrow margin lasted less than a minute.
After a face-mask penalty on the kickoff return helped Vienna start near midfield, Holmes needed only two plays to strike again, connecting with Mayr for a 54-yard touchdown and a 26–17 halftime lead. It was the type of response that separates a talented team from a ruthless one.
Defense swings the game
The third quarter belonged to Vienna’s defense and field-position game. The Panthers moved the ball but could not finish drives. Wang was sacked five times overall, and Wrocław’s best third-quarter threat ended on downs at the Vienna 28. When the Vikings got their chance, they were clinical: Holmes hit former NFL tight end Bernhard Seikovits for 49 yards, and Wiesigstrauch finished the short drive with a 7-yard touchdown run to make it 33–17.
Vikings close the door
Wrocław still had one more punch. Harley’s second touchdown, a 35-yard strike from Wang early in the fourth quarter, cut into the lead. But the conversion attempt turned into a Vienna exclamation point when Amani Dennis returned the blocked kick the other way, giving the Vikings two points and pushing the score to 42–23.
From there, Vienna bled the game away. The final drive lasted more than six minutes and ended at the Wrocław 20 as the Vikings closed out a road win that was more hard-earned than the final margin suggests.
Standout performers
Holmes finished 17 of 26 for 349 yards and four touchdowns with no interceptions, adding a short rushing touchdown. Mayr caught six passes for 135 yards and two scores, while Darrell Stewart Jr. added three receptions for 57 yards and a touchdown. Wiesigstrauch gave Vienna balance with 68 rushing yards and a touchdown on 10 carries.
For the Panthers, Wang completed 32 of 43 passes for 356 yards and three touchdowns without an interception, but the constant pressure and lack of a consistent run game made Wrocław too one-dimensional. Harley was the star of the day for the home team, repeatedly winning downfield and after the catch.
Straight was one of the game’s defining players for Vienna. His two forced fumbles prevented Wrocław from building early momentum and helped the Vikings survive the stretch when the Panthers looked capable of taking control.
The Panthers proved they can trade punches with one of the league’s heavyweights. The Vikings proved they are still the team everyone else has to chase.
