Wonder what it’s like to play football in Japan?
Wide receiver Robert Johnson and linebacker Brandon Berry play for the Asahi Soft Drinks Challengers in Japan’s X League and recently spoke with Inside Sport Japan about life playing football in Japan and the cultural differences. Johnson, who spent the 2017 season with the Marburg Mercenaries in the German Football League, was also able to draw comparisons between football in Japan and Germany.
Johnson, a Mississippi State grad and native of Hattiesburg, Mississippi and Detroit-born Berry from the University of Buffalo, recently helped the Challengers to their second win of the season, a 33-0 blanking of the Fuji Xerox Minerva AFC .
The Challengers (2-2) are in the hunt for a Japanese title.
As mentioned, this is Johnson’s second stint playing football abroad. He helped the Mercenaries reach the playoffs last season with 59 catches for 801 yards. Berry is playing football in another country for the first time.
Following the game against Fuji Xerox, the pair spoke with Inside Sport Japan.
