The Winnipeg Blue Bombers (4-2) erased a 17-point fourth-quarter deficit to defeat the Ottawa REDBLACKS (0-6) 36-34 in a thrilling overtime victory Sunday night at TD Place Stadium. Quarterback Dru Brown starred in his return to Ottawa, throwing for 317 yards and two touchdowns before delivering the decisive two-point conversion to complete one of Winnipeg’s most dramatic comebacks in recent memory.
REDBLACKS build commanding lead
The opening half was dominated by field position as Brett Lauther and Sergio Castillo traded field goals through the first two quarters.
Late in the second quarter, the REDBLACKS finally broke through. Jake Maier moved the offense down the field with three straight completions before a pass interference penalty set up Bryson Barnes for a one-yard touchdown run with two seconds remaining in the half, giving Ottawa a 19-9 lead.
The home team extended the advantage early in the third quarter when Maier connected with Justin Hardy on a 12-yard touchdown pass to make it 26-9. Maier finished with a season-high 344 passing yards, while Greg Bell added 65 rushing yards on 14 carries.
Bombers refuse to quit
Facing a three-score deficit entering the fourth quarter, the Blue Bombers found another gear.
After Castillo narrowed the gap with a field goal, Brown engineered two touchdown drives. He found Nic Demski for an eight-yard touchdown before leading a 79-yard march that ended with a five-yard scoring pass to Ontaria Wilson with just over a minute remaining. The extra point tied the game at 26-26 and forced overtime.
Brown completed 27 of 43 passes for 317 yards and two touchdowns, with Tim White leading the receivers with 97 yards. Demski added 90 receiving yards and a touchdown, while Wilson caught the game-tying score.
Defense delivers in key moments
Although Ottawa moved the ball effectively for much of the night, Winnipeg’s defense made several crucial stops that kept the comeback within reach.
The Blue Bombers turned away Bryson Barnes on three consecutive goal-line rushing attempts early in the third quarter before Jake Kelly intercepted Maier in the end zone later in the period. Willie Jefferson also came up with a key fourth-quarter sack that helped swing momentum back to the visitors.
Those defensive plays proved just as important as Brown’s late-game heroics.
Overtime thriller
The teams exchanged field goals twice in overtime before the CFL’s new overtime format came into play.
Eugene Lewis hauled in Ottawa’s successful two-point conversion to give the REDBLACKS a 34-32 lead. Brown answered immediately, connecting with Wilson for two points before completing another two-point conversion that put Winnipeg ahead 36-34.
The Blue Bombers defense then knocked away Ottawa’s final conversion attempt, sealing an unforgettable comeback victory.
The win sends the Blue Bombers home with momentum ahead of next week’s meeting with the Calgary Stampeders, while the REDBLACKS head into their bye week still searching for their first victory of the season.
