Germany: Schwäbisch Hall Unicorns dominate Straubing Spiders in 66-21 blowout win

The Schwäbisch Hall Unicorns (2-0) put on a show at the Optima Sportpark on Saturday, overwhelming the Straubing Spiders (0-1) with a commanding 66-21 victory in their second game of the 2026 season in the effect® ENERGY GFL. With over 1,600 fans in attendance, the Unicorns showcased their offensive firepower and defensive prowess, leaving no doubt about their intentions this season.

Unicorns start strong

From the opening whistle, it was clear that the Unicorns were ready to make a statement. Just one minute into the game, quarterback Lars Heidrich connected with Kelley Joiner for a stunning 73-yard touchdown pass, setting the tone for the rest of the match. The Unicorns quickly took a 7-0 lead, and the momentum only grew from there.

The Spiders struggled to find their rhythm, facing relentless pressure from the Unicorns‘ defense. Straubing quarterback Anthony Perkins was sacked multiple times in the first quarter, and the Unicorns capitalized on their defensive dominance. After stopping the Spiders‘ punter deep in their territory, Schwäbisch Hall extended their lead to 10-0 with a field goal from Toni Trefzer.

Defensive dominance

By the end of the first quarter, the Unicorns had built a commanding 24-0 lead. The Spiders finally found some offensive success early in the second quarter when Perkins connected with Eloi Soler-Pintiado for a 10-yard touchdown pass, narrowing the gap to 24-7. However, the Unicorns quickly responded, scoring two more touchdowns before halftime to take a 38-7 lead into the break.

The Unicorns‘ defense continued to shine, consistently shutting down the Spiders‘ attempts to mount a comeback. Even as Schwäbisch Hall began to rotate in their second-string players in the second half, the dominance remained evident.

Second half surge

The third quarter saw the Unicorns extend their lead to 52-7, with touchdowns from Mathis Harang and Kelley Joiner. Despite the score, the Spiders showed resilience, scoring two touchdowns of their own to make it 52-21. However, it was too little, too late, as the Unicorns maintained control throughout the game.

Toni Trefzer capped off the scoring with a five-yard touchdown run, bringing the final score to 66-21. Trefzer was a standout performer, contributing significantly with multiple extra points and a field goal.

Looking ahead

With this impressive victory, the Unicorns have firmly established themselves as a force to be reckoned with in the GFL this season, while Straubing will need to regroup and find their footing as they look to bounce back in their next matchup.
