The Monterrey Fundidores, who play in Mexico’s Liga De Futbol Americano (LFA), have re-signed wide receiver Anthony ‘AJ’ Benson for the 2020 season.
The Fundidores reached the LFA semifinals in 2019 but were knocked out by the Mexico City Raptors.
The 6’2″, 190 lb Benson from San Diego, California, is a veteran of international football having played for teams in the Ukraine, Hungary and Mexico after graduating from Friends University. Entering his sixth season abroad, Benson is returning to a team that came very close to reaching the LFA championship game in 2019.
“I really enjoyed playing in Mexico for the Fundidores this past season and we came close. I think we have a shot at winning the LFA title in 2020 so I wanted to help the team achieve that.”
Benson is always asked about the differences in playing in Europe and Mexico
“I think here in Mexico they are very physical and also they have high knowledge of the game especially because they have a college level here. Also, a lot of players in the league played in the Canadian Football League this past year.”
As a traveling football pro, he has had a chance to experience different cultures and different cuisines. With his second year in Mexico coming up, what food is he looking forward to eating again?
“I grew fond of a taco called a campechana it’s is very good and my favorite thing to eat.”
The LFA season kicks off in late February with the championship final in mid-May.
