Austrian OL Bernhard Raimann secures landmark $100 million extension with Indianapolis Colts
The Indianapolis Colts have solidified their offensive line by signing Austrian left tackle Bernhard Raimann to a four-year, $100 million contract extension, including $60 million guaranteed, making him one of the NFL’s highest-paid players at his position.
Breakout performance earns premium pay
Raimann, 27, elevated his game in 2024 with a standout season, ranking 24th in pass-blocking efficiency among 83 eligible tackles. His run-blocking prowess shone as Indianapolis running back Jonathan Taylor averaged nearly 5.0 yards per carry behind Raimann and left guard Quenton Nelson. Pro Football Focus (PFF) graded him eighth among left tackles overall (+85.1) with a +82.0 pass-blocking mark, allowing just 4 sacks and 20 pressures across 471 pass-blocking snaps.
From Austrian prospect to NFL cornerstone
A native of Steinbrunn, Austria, Raimann began playing football at 14with the Vienna Vikings as a tight end before transitioning to tackle at Central Michigan. Drafted in the third round (77th overall) in 2022, he has rapidly developed into a reliable blindside protector. General manager Chris Ballard praised his growth, stating, “The progress Berny has made from year one to now is pretty incredible.”
Negotiations overcome early hurdles
Despite initial disagreements on valuation, both sides reached a deal ahead of training camp. Raimann’s $25 million average annual value ties him with Houston Texans tackle Laremy Tunsil for fifth-highest among left tackles. The extension preempted his impending free agency in 2025, securing a key piece for Indianapolis’ rebuild.
Colts prioritize line stability
By locking in Raimann, the Colts ensure continuity for quarterback Anthony Richardson and their ground game. Ballard emphasized Raimann’s value, noting, “We think a lot of him.” With this deal, Indianapolis invests in a player whose technical refinement and durability (27 starts since 2022) align with their long-term offensive vision.
Raimann’s journey from European prospect to top-tier NFL tackle underscores the global reach of football talent—and the Colts’ commitment to nurturing it.
