The Orlando Storm and DC Defenders met for the third straight week with a trip to the United Bowl on the line, and it was the defending champions from DC who finally got the win they had been chasing. Behind a standout performance from Jason Bean and a dominant defensive effort, the Defenders knocked off the top-seeded Storm 28-22 in Daytona Beach, earning another shot at a league title.
Defenders seize early control
From the opening drive, DC looked determined to change the script after two regular-season losses to Orlando.
Bean moved the offense efficiently, converting key third downs and finding Keke Coutee for several important gains. The drive ended with Deon Jackson powering into the end zone from three yards out, giving the visitors an early lead.
The Storm answered with a Michael Lantz field goal following a strong kick return from Jashaun Corbin, but DC continued to control possession. Abram Smith capped another impressive drive with a three-yard touchdown run, extending the lead to 14-3.
Orlando misses opportunities
The first half was defined by missed chances for Orlando.
Jack Plummer produced flashes of brilliance, including a 45-yard completion to KJ Hamler that set up a scoring opportunity. However, the Defenders repeatedly tightened up near the goal line.
The biggest moment came when Orlando reached the one-yard line with a chance to tie the game. Instead, DC’s defense came up with a crucial fourth-down stop, preserving the lead and swinging momentum back to the defending champions.
Bean then engineered another strong drive before halftime, although a missed field goal kept the score at 14-6 heading into the break.
Defense changes the game
The second half opened with another setback for the Storm.
A tipped pass turned into an interception for Bryce Thompson, leading to a DC field goal and a 17-6 advantage.
Orlando briefly came alive when Kana’i Mauga intercepted Spencer Sanders and returned it 60 yards for a touchdown, cutting the deficit to 17-13 and energizing the crowd.
But every time the Storm threatened, Bean had an answer.
The quarterback led a 75-yard scoring drive and found Briley Moore for a touchdown that pushed the lead back to double digits entering the fourth quarter.
Bean delivers in the clutch
Whenever DC needed a play, Bean delivered one.
He repeatedly escaped pressure to convert critical third downs and kept drives alive throughout the afternoon. The Defenders finished an impressive 10-for-16 on third down, a dramatic turnaround from their struggles against Orlando in the regular season.
Matt McCrane added a huge 61-yard four-point field goal late in the fourth quarter to extend the lead to 28-16.
Plummer gave the Storm one final chance with a 40-yard touchdown pass to Chris Rowland, but the comeback fell short.
Bean closed the game with another clutch third-down completion to Erik Ezukanma, allowing the Defenders to run out the clock and celebrate a return trip to the United Bowl.
For DC, the title defense remains alive. For Orlando, a remarkable season ended one win short of the championship game.
