Dresden Monarchs replace MVP QB with older brother & former Vanderbilt passer Austyn Carta-Samuels

The reigning German Bowl champion Dresden Monarchs are bringing in a new quarterback to defend their title for the 2022 season. Their choice for replacing the league-leading passer KJ CartaSamuels was tough, but Monarchs management didn’t have to look far, signing KJ’s older brother Austyn Carta-Samuels.

The older brother kept things light when announcing his commitment to the Dresden team:

“In the thirtieth year of the Dresden Monarchs and you go out and grab the thirty-year-old brother of last year’s MVP in their first championship. Guys, I’m fired up to get out to Germany, become part of the culture and learn more about the German community.”

Big brother has big shoes to fill as his younger sibling KJ Carta-Samuels led the Monarchs to a nearly perfect season while ranking number one in the league for passing yards (4038) and touchdowns (54). KJ Carta-Samuels finished his dominant championship season with GFL-All-Star honors and first-team AllEurope recognition.

KJ, who is rumored to be moving to play on another continent, commented on his brother returning to the field:

“The dude is gonna rip it better than he ever has to…. just watch. I’m so proud of him.”

Austyn Carta-Samuels, 30, has been in the coaching ranks since he last played at Vanderbilt University (NCAA D1) in 2013. As the starting quarterback for the Commodores, the 6’1 215-pound passer put up 2,268 and 11 passing touchdowns while adding 115 yards and five scores on the ground. Prior to transferring to Vanderbilt the San Jose, California native threw for 3,655 yards and 19 touchdowns while playing for the University of Wyoming (NCAA D1) for two seasons. The freshman quarterback led the Cowboys to their first bowl game since 2004 and won conference freshman of the year honors.

After finishing up his college career, the former SEC quarterback jumped right into coaching spending five seasons with the University of Missouri (NCAA D1). During his time with the Tigers, he helped coach current Denver Broncos quarterback Drew Lock. In 2018, 247Sports.com named Carta-Samuels, 27, one of its 30-under-30 assistant coaches on the rise. This past year Carta-Samuels served as the offensive coordinator at Menlo School a high school in California. Austyn and his brother KJ also run a quarterback training company called LockedInAthlete.

Dresden looks to build on its fantastic 2021 season this upcoming summer re-signing many key German players. Head coach Ulz Dauber and the Monarchs are eager to get back to the German bowl this year in an always competitive GFL North featuring a talented Berlin Adler team along with a reloaded New Yorker Lions squad.
