The Seinäjoki Crocodiles (5-1) kept pace in the Maple League title race Saturday, defeating the Wasa Royals (2-4) 31-9 to claim their eighth straight Bothnia Bowl victory.
Crocodiles strike early
Playing at Wirokit Stadium, the Crocodiles controlled the game from the opening kickoff and built a commanding 24-6 halftime lead. The Royals, hampered by injuries throughout the afternoon, never found an answer as Seinäjoki dictated the tempo on both sides of the ball.
With national team running backs Arttu Blomqvist and Julius Tuominiemi unavailable, the Crocodiles leaned heavily on their passing game, putting the offense in the hands of quarterback CJ Fowler.
Fowler shines through the air
Fowler responded with one of his busiest outings of the season, throwing 60 passes while completing 58 percent for 366 yards and four touchdowns. His production fueled an offense that piled up 436 total yards.
Maurico Porcha returned to the lineup in style, hauling in 13 receptions for 127 yards and a touchdown. Paavo Rantakömi also enjoyed a productive afternoon, catching two touchdown passes as the Crocodiles repeatedly stretched the Royals defense.
The balanced execution through the air allowed Seinäjoki to remain comfortably in control throughout the contest.
Defense keeps Royals in check
The Crocodiles defense limited the Royals to just 142 total yards and never allowed the visitors to build any offensive momentum.
New Wasa quarterback Shazzon Mumphrey completed only six of 22 passes for 22 yards while throwing one interception and absorbing two sacks. His lone touchdown came on a rushing score, while Loris Sava provided the biggest offensive spark for the Royals with 110 rushing yards on 18 carries.
Defensively, Arttu Tapola led the way for the Crocodiles with 7.5 tackles, while Aatu Tuokko recorded the game’s only interception. Aleksi Majaniemi paced the Royals with 11 tackles.
The victory keeps the Crocodiles firmly in the race for first place in the Maple League regular season and home-field advantage in the playoffs, while the loss leaves the Royals facing an uphill battle to reach the postseason.
