The Seinäjoki Crocodiles (2-0) put their unbeaten record on the line Saturday when they travel to face the winless Tampere Saints (0-3) in Finnish Maple League action at Pyynikki. While the visitors are looking to strengthen their position near the top of the standings, the Saints are searching for their first victory of the season.
Saints hoping line changes pay off
The Saints have struggled offensively through their first three games, with protection issues making life difficult for quarterback Christopher Howard. Howard has been sacked more than any other quarterback in the Maple League, prompting Tampere to strengthen its offensive line with the addition of French center Lounis Benahmed.
His debut comes at an important time as the Saints try to establish a more balanced offense and give Howard the time he needs to connect with receiver Logan Collier, one of the league’s most dangerous playmakers.
Crocodiles bring momentum
The Crocodiles opened the season with victories over both Helsinki clubs and now return to action after nearly three weeks away from game competition.
The return of Eetu Mäki-Maunus should provide a boost to the special teams, while the defensive front remains one of the team’s biggest strengths. Charles Akanno headlines a pass rush that will once again look to pressure opposing quarterbacks from the opening snap.
Battle in the trenches
Saturday’s game may ultimately be decided along the line of scrimmage.
If Benahmed can help stabilize the Saints’ offensive line, Howard could have the extra time needed to attack downfield. If not, Akanno and the Crocodiles defensive front could control the game.
Although Seinäjoki enters as the favorite, last year’s meeting serves as a reminder not to overlook Tampere. The Saints pushed the Crocodiles to the limit before falling 28-21, and with Collier capable of changing a game in an instant, the visitors will need another disciplined performance to remain unbeaten.
