Former Pro Bowl receiver Laveranues Coles begins new career as police officer
Former NFL star Laveranues Coles has embarked on an exciting new career as a police officer with the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office. After a successful 10-year career in the NFL, where he played for the New York Jets, Washington Redskins, and Cincinnati Bengals, Coles is now focused on serving his community in a different capacity.
From the field to the force
Coles recently completed police academy training, marking a significant transition from his days as a professional athlete. The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office announced his new role on social media last month. Coles is not alone in this transition; he joins former NFL linebacker Jeff Kopp and several other ex-players, with nine former NFL players currently employed by the department. This unique blend of athleticism and public service highlights a commitment to community engagement and safety.
A celebrated career
Before joining the sheriff’s office, Coles had a remarkable football career. He starred at Florida State University, helping the Seminoles secure a national championship before being drafted by the Jets in the third round of the 2000 NFL Draft. Over his career, he topped the 1,000-yard mark three times, finishing with 674 receptions for 8,609 yards and 49 touchdowns. His standout season came in 2003 when he made the Pro Bowl after catching 82 passes for 1,204 yards and six touchdowns with the Redskins.
Community commitment
Coles’ transition to law enforcement reflects his commitment to community service and personal growth. The police academy training was rigorous, with Kopp noting that it involved significantly more running than they experienced in the NFL. Both Kopp and Coles have embraced their new roles, finding fulfillment in serving their community. As Coles steps into this new chapter, he is ready to make a positive impact in Jacksonville, proving that athletes can continue to contribute meaningfully after their playing days are over.
