The Braunschweig Lions (2-5) stretched their winning streak to two games Saturday, pulling away in the second half for a 55-28 victory over the Straubing Spiders (0-6) in an interconference German Football League matchup played under scorching conditions at Donausportzentrum Peterswöhrd.
With temperatures soaring well above 90 degrees Fahrenheit, the two teams traded punches throughout the first half before Braunschweig‘s explosive offense took control after the break.
Fast-paced first half
The Lions wasted little time getting on the scoreboard as Ryon Thomas connected with Peter Anderson for a 67-yard touchdown on just the second play from scrimmage.
The Spiders answered quickly. Raleigh Yeldell led a strong drive before finding Jordan Xavier Pouncey on a 44-yard touchdown pass to even the score at 7-7.
The back-and-forth continued in the second quarter. Thomas hooked up with Anderson again for a touchdown before Jvonte Kareem Davis answered with a 12-yard scoring run. Thomas later found Leon Kusterer for a 31-yard touchdown, but Yeldell responded with a touchdown pass to Pouncey, and a successful two-point conversion by Davis tied the game at 21-21.
Just before halftime, Thomas capped another drive with an 18-yard touchdown pass to Jonathan ter Horst, giving Braunschweig a 28-21 lead at the break.
Game turns after halftime
The Spiders came out firing to start the third quarter as Davis powered in for his second rushing touchdown, tying the game once again at 28-28.
Moments later, however, the game took a dramatic turn.
Yeldell was forced from the game with an injury following a late hit, and Straubing also lost Jordan Xavier Pouncey and Okeoghene Bazunu to disqualifications after the ensuing altercation.
The momentum quickly shifted to the visitors.
Thomas and Anderson take over
With the Spiders shorthanded, Thomas and Anderson proved unstoppable.
The pair connected for three more touchdown passes in the third quarter, covering three, 12 and one yard, as the Lions suddenly opened a commanding 49-28 lead. Louis Bergeron then intercepted substitute quarterback Alexander Biebl to halt any hopes of a comeback.
Thomas added a 12-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter to cap another outstanding performance, finishing with seven touchdown passes and one rushing score.
Despite the defeat, Straubing received strong performances from Davis, who rushed for 69 yards and two touchdowns, while Pouncey caught two touchdown passes before leaving the game. The loss leaves the Spiders still searching for their first victory of the season, while the Lions continue to build momentum heading into the second half of the year.
