Germany: Straubing Spiders sign versatile Dennis Barnes for 2026 GFL Season

The Straubing Spiders, aiming to improve after a challenging 3-9 season in the 2025 GFL South conference, have signed American defensive back Dennis Barnes, adding a versatile and experienced playmaker to their secondary.

Barnes’ standout college career
The 5’11”, 175-pound defensive back from Jefferson City, Missouri brings strong credentials from his time in NCAA Division I. Over 31 games for the UTEP MinersBarnes tallied 124 tackles, 9.5 tackles for loss, 1 sack, and 2 interceptions. His performance earned him All-Conference USA honors in 2021, showcasing his ability to compete at a high level.

Unique experience on and off the field
In addition to his playing background, Barnes brings a rare depth of football knowledge. He served as one of the youngest high school head coaches in America at Hot Springs High School in New Mexico and ran a successful youth 7v7 program, demonstrating leadership both on the field and from the sidelines.

Recent international experience
Barnes most recently played for Cruzeiro Esporte Clube in Brazil in 2025, where he continued to display his two-way versatility. His combination of defensive instincts, sure tackling, and high football IQ should make him an immediate contributor for the Spiders as they look to strengthen a defense that struggled throughout last season’s campaign.
