Honduras claims IFAF Central American gridiron crown in defensive shutout

Honduras won the IFAF Central Americas Championships for tackle football with an 8-0 victory over Guatemala, while host nation El Salvador won for the first time to claim the bronze medal in triple overtime.

Honduras topped the group stages, which were played in Tegucigalpa in April and El Salvador in July, with the competition’s only perfect record, winning all three games. Gold medal game opponent Guatemala had seen off the challenge of Nicaragua to qualify for the final.

At the Saaif Complex in San Antonio, a tense final remained scoreless until the fourth quarter when quarterback Luis Mario Solis Sarmiento connected with wide receiver Mijail Raskoff for a touchdown and Marvin Eduardo Soto Hernandez added a two-point score to seal the continental title for Honduras.

The bronze medal game saw El Salvador gain revenge for a 38-0 loss to Nicaragua in the group stages back in April, taking the game to a third period of overtime before a safety secured the win. Heber Ramirez had put El Salvador ahead with a third quarter touchdown before Pablo Vicente Padilla sent the game into overtime with a fourth quarter score.
