The Panasonic Impulse advanced to their fifth consecutive Rice Bowl with a dramatic 23-20 victory over the Fujitsu Frontiers in a thrilling XLeague semifinal that featured a stunning fourth-quarter comeback and last-second heroics.
Impulse control the early phases
Through three quarters, Panasonic methodically built a 17-3 lead behind the steady play of quarterback Yuya Araki, who completed 21 of 34 passes for 238 yards and two touchdowns. His connections with receivers Kohei Naganuma (42 yards, 1 TD) and Risuke Kuwata (78 yards) provided the offensive spark, while the ground game led by Victor Mitchell (51 rushing yards, 52 receiving yards) offered balanced production. Kicker Shintaro Saeki added a field goal to help establish what appeared to be a comfortable advantage heading into the final period.
Frontiers mount furious comeback
The fourth quarter belonged to Fujitsu, who erupted for 17 points in a stunning reversal. Quarterback Tsubasa Takagi (20/29, 212 yards, 1 TD) sparked the rally with a touchdown pass to Mikito Itokawa, followed by a critical defensive play when Taiyo Kitagawa forced a fumble that Yu Kaizaki recovered. Backup quarterback Yodai Kamada then entered and immediately connected with Samajie Grant on a 10-yard touchdown pass. Kicker Koji Nosho‘s field goal gave Fujitsu their first lead at 20-17, completing what seemed like an improbable comeback victory.
Saeki’s clutch kicking seals it
With time running out, Panasonic responded calmly. Saeki first connected on a 22-yard field goal to tie the game at 20-20. After a failed Fujitsu field goal attempt, the Impulse drove into scoring position one final time. With just four seconds remaining, Saeki calmly drilled a 43-yard field goal to secure the 23-20 victory, sending Panasonic to another championship appearance and ending Fujitsu‘s valiant comeback effort in heartbreaking fashion. The win sets up another Rice Bowl appearance for the dominant Impulse, who showed both poise and resilience in surviving this semifinal test.
