Lawrence McCoy: The Baddest Back in Germany

The Berlin Rebels advanced to the German Football League quarterfinals this past season for the first time in their history and much of the credit has to go to running back Lawrence McCoy, in his third year with the club. The Rebels improved from a 4-8 record in 2015 to 10-4-1 behind the bruising running of McCoy. He rushed for a league-best 1,943 yards in 15 games and 25 touchdowns while also helping to defeat the German champion Braunschweig New Yorker Lions during the regular season.

AFI’s John McKeon chatted with the former Duquesne Dukes star about his remarkable season.

AFI:  You led the GFL in rushing yards (1.943) and rushing touchdowns (25). What made this possible for you?

Lawrence McCoy: There are a number of elements that came together for me to produce a season as such. To name a few. First and foremost, my offensive line and downfield blocking deserve to receive a lot of credit. Those guys worked tremendously hard this season. In addition, the coaching staff put together effective game plans and put us in situations to be a productive offense. I’d also like to thank my trainer Matthias Hirsch, and his staff at Evope. They kept me healthy and prepared to take on a long season.

AFI: Can you talk about the Rebels organization as a whole.

McCoy: The Rebels organization has been great. The blend they have between management and coaching is what has propelled this team to new heights. Everyone involved in those areas has laid the ground work for continued success. Much thanks goes to our owner Mr. Riedel, and Sports Director/Team Manager Dogan Özdincer. I believe he has one of the very best football minds in all of Europe. From having an eye for talent as well as everything involved in football schematically. Our head coach Kim Kuci and his staff are a great blend of coaches that work well together. The success of our season this past year was build on the foundation laid by the work they do week in and week out!

AFI: Have you enjoyed living in Berlin?

McCoy: Living in Berlin has been a experience of a lifetime. I can’t say enough good things about the city. Being able to experience the combination of many cultures and lifestyles is very impactful. The history as well both recent and past is very interesting, and eye opening. All in all I would recommend at least one visit to Berlin for anyone looking for a great time and adventure.

AFI: What are your plans for next season?

McCoy: As far as in next season. I usually make those decisions after the new year. I don’t know what the future holds, but If I’m back I’ll be ready to go!!
