In Group A, quarterback Michael O’Connor threw seven touchdowns, three of them to Francois Rocheleau, as Canada breezed past Guatemala 34-6 in their opening game. Their clash with Brazil was a closer contest, but the former CFL passer was on target with four more end zone strikes and Rocheleau again caught a pair along with Jeanslee Alexis in a 32-13 win. Brazil had started the day with a 27-18 win over Colombia.
Defending champion USA beat Guatemala 66-7 as Nico Casares threw four touchdown passes, including one to regular starter under center Darrell Doucette. Four different players scored rushing touchdowns for the dominant Americans. They ended the day with a comprehensive 62-13 win over first time entrant Colombia.
Panama’s tall and imposing receiver Jofiel Rogers caught six touchdowns from quarterback Alvaro Roux in a 55-21 Group B win over Argentina, then Chile were humbled 50-6 and 54 points without reply saw off the challenge of El Salvador.
Chile’s well-drilled offense was too strong for Jamaica, the first-ever Caribbean nation to enter an IFAF competition, winning 27-13. The Jamaicans bounced back to beat El Salvador 32-26.
“We are honored to be the first team from Jamaica and the Caribbean to play internationally and just to be here and represent our country is a dream come true,” said receiver Clifford Kurker, who scored his nation’s first touchdown and added two more in their victory.
“I am proud to make history, but without my teammates it would not be possible. We are the first Jamaican team to win a game and nobody will ever be able to say that which is very humbling.”
Silver medalists from two years ago Mexico put 54 unanswered points past El Salvador then beat Argentina and Jamaica convincingly to top the group.
