Poland: Warsaw Eagles rout Warsaw Mets in battle of unbeatens

In a highly anticipated showdown between Polish Football League titans, the Warsaw Eagles (8-0) dismantled the previously unbeaten Warsaw Mets (7-1) 31-6 on Sunday at  Gen. Kazimierz Sosnkowski Stadium, securing home-field advantage throughout the playoffs. The Eagles’ suffocating defense and disciplined special teams proved decisive in the regular-season finale between crosstown rivals.

Clash of titans loses early fire
Hype for the “premature final” between two 7-0 squads gave way to cautious, methodical play early. Both teams conserved personnel ahead of the playoffs, with the Mets notably holding back star wide receiver Krzysztof Bartwicki (returning from injury) and limiting flag football champion Artur Czarnik’s snaps. Missing defensive anchor Mateusz Gołoś, the Mets shifted to a two-tight-end offense – a move that backfired spectacularly.

Eagles’ defense writes the script
Warsaw Eagles linemen exploited the Mets’ reconfigured front, dominating the trenches. Adam Dobkowski’s fumble-recovery touchdown set the tone, while defenders Mateusz Jaws and Tomasz Sętkiewicz repeatedly wrecked plays behind the line of scrimmage. Mets quarterback Clayton Uecker faced relentless pressure, stifling the his team’s typically explosive passing attack.

Special teams widen the gap
Kicker Filip Twardowski delivered a flawless performance for the Eagles, drilling all four extra-point attempts and a 47-yard field goal before halftime. His precision contrasted with the Mets’ struggles, as the hosts failed to convert multiple scoring opportunities.

Glimmers of hope fade late
Trailing 24-0 at halftime, the Mets showed life when Jakub Sema – MVP of their Week 7 win over the Lublin Titans – punched in a second-half touchdown. But the Eagles answered with a Jakub Kubacki score, extinguishing any comeback hopes. The Mets’ six points marked their lowest output since the 2023 season opener.

Playoff paths diverge
While the Eagles enter the postseason as clear favorites, the Mets face immediate pressure in Sunday’s quarterfinal against the Katy Wroclawskie Jaguars. A loss would end their championship bid, but a potential Eagles-Mets playoff rematch remains tantalizing for fans. For now, the Warsaw Eagles stand unchallenged atop Poland’s football hierarchy, their 25-point statement resonating league-wide.
