Dallas Cowboys kicker Brandon Aubrey rewrites NFL record book in Detroit

In a dazzling display of long-range accuracy, Dallas Cowboys kicker Brandon Aubrey made NFL history during Thursday night’s 44-30 loss to the Detroit Lions, becoming the first player ever to make three field goals of 55 yards or longer in a single game.

A record-shattering night

Aubrey was nearly perfect in a losing effort, connecting on field goals from 57, 55, and a massive 63 yards – all in the first three quarters alone. He added makes from 42 and 29 yards to tie his career high with five field goals in the game. The 63-yard blast was his third from beyond 60 yards this season, another NFL record, and the sixth of his career, extending his own all-time mark.

From soccer pitch to gridiron

Aubrey’s journey to becoming the NFL’s most potent kicking weapon is unique. A former soccer star at Notre Dame who was drafted by Toronto FC of Major League Soccer, he only began kicking footballs in 2019. After winning two championships with the Birmingham Stallions of the USFL, the Cowboys signed him in 2023, and he has since revolutionized the team’s offensive approach.

A coach’s ultimate luxury

The performance left head coach Brian Schottenheimer in awe. “He’s certainly a luxury that I’ve never had before as a coach,” Schottenheimer said. “If it is 55 yards, he makes it. It doesn’t matter if it is 60 or 65 yards — you just send him out there without thinking twice.” Quarterback Dak Prescott echoed the sentiment, noting that crossing midfield essentially puts the team in scoring range. While the loss stung, Aubrey’s legendary leg provided a historic silver lining and solidified his status as the most dangerous long-distance kicker the game has ever seen.
